Courtney and I traveled to San Angelo, Texas which is my hometown and went to a trail of lights along the Concho river. My family goes every year. There is a section at the end where you can get out of the car and walk around and take pictures.

During this time, we walked in front of one of my favorite light displays and had someone take a picture of us. After pictures, I gave her a note that I had written the day before. While distracted, my sister and two cousins sneaked up behind us to capture pictures of the special moment. After she finished reading the note I pulled the ring out of my pocket and simply asked, ‘Will you marry me?”

Jess and I met at the largest rodeo in the county in Houston Texas.

The engagement happened at Jess’ belated Friendsgiving event. Every year some of her best friends get together for a feast. Before we start eating, everyone goes around the table and says what they are thankful for. I positioned myself last, so that I could get down on bent knee and propose!

We got engaged at Community Of Hope Church. We grew up together in this church and it was the perfect place to propose. She had no idea. She thought my car was broken down and I needed her to pick me up so we could go to dinner with her family. It was the perfect place for us.

We went mini golfing in Helen because that was where we met face to face for the first time, had our first date, and our first kiss. We played both courses at Bavarian Mini Golf, the place of our first date exactly two and a half years earlier. I beat her both times, just like our first date. After we finished, she tried to get into the car because her feet/ankles hurt from wearing heels, but I wouldn’t let her. I turned her around and away from the car, then got on one knee and asked!

It was Christmas eve and we had just gotten done eating dinner at a really fancy restaurant downtown with my family. I convinced her to come with me to the canal to walk and look at lights. Unfortunately there wasn’t any lights and she was ready to go home. So I said “What was that!” and pointed the other way and while she looked around I got down on one knee and proposed in front of the canal and museum.

I booked a post-Christmas vacation for us to celebrate the New Year together in the warmth and sunshine of Florida. I was able to get reservations to an amazing restaurant/piano bar for us on New Years Eve. When the bottle of wine arrived, I made a toast and then stood up and then dropped to one knee. I asked the question, Athena said ***YES!!!***. Later on we continued our night at the piano bar. It was a perfect night to end the year. Thanks to Ring Cam, we have the moment to relive forever!

How he Asked

Well, of course I was shaking and nervous. Her family helped me plan the proposal with when and where. She normally knows I’m up to something, but this time she didn’t. Her sister had everyone taking couples photos as the ship was leaving the port. When it was our turn, I had the ring next to me and I got down on my knee as she turned the other way. She actually didn’t see me kneeling down when she turned around. Before I said anything she looked down, saw the ring and literally said “oh shit”.

She caught me off guard and I wasn’t able to say anything except “will you marry me”. Which we aren’t sure if she said “yes” or nodded her head yes. But it was perfect and made our whole cruise so much better. I was so nervous I didn’t have the camera pointing at her the whole time, but I’ll still never forget the moment I asked her to marry me.

How to Budget for your Wedding

$

Making a wedding budget is like cutting up a big huge pie. It has to be shared with every single person involved or attending your wedding. Budgeting helps you figure out how big that pie is going to be, and most importantly the best way to slice it so that everyone is happy. Follow the steps below and download our sheet to help you get through the first steps of planning.
  1. Have a good talk with your partner about what kind of wedding they are looking for.

Start by asking each other what you expect out of your wedding. Did they want to invite every person important in their life or more of a small quiet one? Talk about what you actually imagined your wedding to be like and bring up what you may be worried about. Lay it all out on the table, and then rank the pieces of your wedding by importance. This is really important and can be difficult so we made a little activity sheet to help you and your partner to rank this quick and easy. Save this sheet, and use it when you need to cut costs.
  1. How much are the two of you willing to contribute?

Let’s face it, the times have changed and weddings continue to become more lavish and pricey. Consider coming together with two numbers, a high amount and a low amount, that the both of you are able to contribute together. These numbers matter and are unavoidable when it comes to the many minor expenses that will pop-up and giving yourself room in this area will save you a ton of headache later. In the end, it may not matter after the next step.
  1. Here is how to ask the families in a polite, respectful way.

Ask and be sure to understand what each family is expecting out of your wedding before accepting any contributions. Some parents may want to plan the whole thing if they are paying for everything, while others want you to be sure that family traditions are upheld and that your distant grandma’s aunt-in-law twice removed is invited. Understanding how helpful and involved they want to be in the planning is good to know when you make the big ask. Before asking them to see the checkbook, your best bet is to give them a heads up and give them time to check their finances. Asking them out to dinner and asking for the dollar amount is like proposing on the first date. Make a phone call and drop a hint along the lines of “This Tuesday at dinner, we wanted to talk about planning and budgeting for the wedding.”   Give them a few days to let that sink in and give them time to talk to each other about it. Then at dinner time, start the discussion by saying, “Handsome and I have beginning to plan out the wedding and we wanted to know how you wanted to be involved!” Hear them out and ask questions and share what you and your fiance have come up with. Then comes the budget question. “Handsome and I are putting together a budget, and we wanted to ask if you were planning on contributing?” Typically a family will give a bit of a vague answer but it is pretty important to know the “let’s try to keep it under $____” number. We all know that when it comes to dollar amounts, a small amount of money to some may be small to others.
  1. Now that you know the budget, consider these areas to cut cost and budget for.

    1. Cutting down the guest list can be tough, but it ends up being one of the biggest expenses. Reducing the guestlist saves on the catering, bar, and even the cost of flowers (center pieces), and the type of reception hall you need.
    2. The bar can be another one of those big expenses that can be reduced dramatically by opting into another package. Ask if your venue to limit the bar to beer, wine, and a signature cocktail which can save you thousands.
    3. Pick a great looking venue that has a bunch of built in decor. The more decor at your venue the less you need to spend on jazzing it up.
    4. Reuse the flowers from the ceremony to the reception. Asking your florist to work with you on creating arrangements that can be reused at the ceremony and reception can cut your costs by a quarter to a half.
    5. Do a fall wedding. Typically, after September places have off-peak prices and are willing to work with budgets around the fall months. It helps that black tuxedos are a 50 degrees cooler and the trees are colorful

Don’t forget to think about these very common budget breaking mistakes.

    1. Taxes. A $25,000 wedding with 8% in taxes can create an additional $2000 in additional costs!
    2. Delivery, Set-up, Break Down fees. Yup! They won’t tell you but they will charge you for it. Be sure you ask about these fees with every vendor you work with.

  • Overtime fees. If you rent a venue till 11:00 that may mean you have to end the festivities at 10:30 so your clean-up crew can go through the venue.
  • Service charges and tips. Most venues will add these service charges and tips but be absolutely sure to ask what the amounts will be and if they add it on.

How to pick a venue.

Locking down your venue is when the clock starts ticking and things become real. Be sure you have asked all the right questions so that months down the road you’re not doing things like renting a dance floor or learning about about a sound restriction a month before the wedding. This guide will help make decisions in making sure this fits your style and asking the right questions to weigh your choices well.   How often does your venue do weddings? Venues typically have a certain level of “experience” running weddings and the more weddings that have taken place there the better. Any unconventional venues like an art gallery or a nice looking warehouse may not know how to handle the demands that a wedding entails (and may cost you more in renting tables, chairs, and more).   Lighting and echo check and echo check. Make sure to visit your venue during the time of day that you plan on having your festivities. Some venues look great at night but during the time of the festivities you may be surprised by the things that seem to show themselves in the light. If you are having a DJ or live music, be sure check out the acoustics of the room. Sometimes the band can get disoriented by the echo, or guests may not be able to hear one another talking.   Make sure it fits your style… and guests! How’s the view and color? Does the architecture seem more rustic or contemporary? Sometimes these venues look really big without tables, guests and a dance floor. Consider allowing 25-30 square feet per guest you have attending (this should not be strictly followed). All in all, just be sure that your are happy with the style and that your guests can fit in just fine!   Here are the questions you really really should ask. Don’t leave anything to chance!   Is the site available on your date? Do you have any other events planned that date? How many hours will the site be available to us? What are the overtime fees? How do you charge for the venue? By person, by hour, or a flat fee? Can you accomodate X guests comfortably? Do you have a liquor licence? Can we bring in our own alcohol? What are the restrictions on sound, decor, or dress code? How much parking is available? Will there be a manager overseeing the reception? What services do you have? On-site coordinator? All-inclusive(site and food)? What supplies/rentals are included? Chairs And Tables Linens Cake table Do you have any sample floor plans or layouts? How many bathrooms? What is the lighting set-up?
